"Come on, Ret! It's only a little further!"
"I don't know why you insisted on me coming with you, this weather is absolutely wretched..."
"And you needed to get out. Now come on!"
A groan greeted the words, coming from the short, skinny boy currently trudging his way through the underbrush, sweat beading his face and matting his dark chestnut hair. He was following another dark-haired young man, one who looked a great deal more at ease cutting a path into the forests that edged the Weyr. They had been walking the whole long morning through, following a rather well-established trail towards the wilderness beyond. Of course, it had been Raleigh's idea. Such things always were.
"What are we doing, anyway?" There was a note of a whine in Retselin's voice, but his older brother took it in stride, flashing a bright grin over his shoulder. "We're exploring, Ret! Just like old times, before you got so set in your ways." A low laugh bubbled up from his lips, and he turned back to his task, reaching for the low-hanging branches that barred the way in front of them.
They were only on the fringes; the forest stretched wide and untraveled before them. Well, not precisely untraveled, but to Raleigh these were uncharted territories, places he had never been able to explore while living in his home hold. Maybe going to Southern Weyr offered him more opportunities for life in general, but it also gave him new places to roam - and by the First Shell, he was going to!
Retselin, however, was miserable. He had only been convinced because his brother had practically begged for him to come along, even knowing that his younger sibling wasn't fond of the outdoors. Yet here he was, trudging through dirt and sand, absolutely exhausted even though they had only just reached the forest's edge. How was he going to get through the rest of this day? "Raleigh... I wish I had your energy."
"I know!" Was his brother's cheerful response, as he forged his way deeper into the forest.
