Character Info
Name: Retselin
Rank: Candidates
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Unsure, probably bisexual
Appearance: A rather fragile-looking lad, Retselin is petite even at his age, having never gone through a growth spurt in either height or build. He is pale, which would seem nearly impossible with a permanently tanned skin tone and a residence in the Southern Continent, but he somehow manages a pallor atop the creamy almond color of his skin. It suggests that the young man doesn't spend a great deal of time outside, basking in the sun's rays, which is completely true.
Dark hair and dark eyes go along with the deep skin tone, his tresses a limp, unstyled mass hanging around his ears and tickling the nape of his neck, with strands that fall messily across his forehead, half-shading his dark brown gaze. It gives him the appearance of constantly being half-awake, or of hiding beneath his hair to avoid confrontation. The rest of his face is well-structured, a hard-lined square jaw looking far too developed for his skinny frame, but rounded cheeks softening the appearance. He tends to look caught between childhood and manhood, a too-mature face and eyes on top of a younger lad's body.
He is not wiry with muscle, nor overridden with fat, but skinny enough that it seems to be a lack in him, an idea of being unfinished. Even though he eats a great deal of food to try to fill out his body, it never seems to work, so the young man seems more breakable than anything, lacking any real strength. Maybe one day he will grow larger, fill out, but he seriously doubts it.
Personality: A bookworm of sorts, Retselin spends a great deal of time indoors, poring over any record he can find, whether it be mundane household facts or Harper songs. He has a good ear and a great appreciation for music, but not the voice or the instrumental skill to do anything about it, although he memorizes just about every song he hears. After so many years of ignoring physical activity in favor of trying to learn more about the world he lives in, he has developed an almost photographic memory and ability to recite back most of the facts he knows.
It is not that the boy is lazy; he has a very strong work ethic when it comes to chores that can be done inside, and is in fact a dab hand at assisting with cooking meals or cleaning up after an entire Hold. But he lacks the strength for much heavy labor, and is not fond of the outdoors; he is a touch near-sighted, and sunlight makes his squinting worse. Besides, he tends to burn despite his naturally dark complexion unless slathered in herbal remedies. He is much more skilled at work that keeps him within the Hold.
In matters of friendship and love, Retselin has always been somewhat reclusive, not good at making friends. He likes to flaunt his knowledge of things, when asked for advice or to inform another of any certain fact, but that often makes him seem a little arrogant. Frankly, he doesn't have very good social skills, and is far too shy to know much about his sexuality or all that goes along with it. He has never considered forming anything more than cursory, necessary relationships with anyone who is not family.
But Retselin is very close to his family, terribly oriented with keeping them all together and closely knit. They are the only people around whom he ever truly relaxes, truly leaves behind the know-it-all attitude and shy nature. With them, he can be simply a boy, with all his worries and victories accepted and discussed. His family is the most important thing to him, and always has been.
History: Born and raised in the Southern Hold, Retselin has never been particularly partial to life anywhere besides his home. His parents were kind, and absolutely in love with each other; he had siblings, older ones who took care of him, and younger ones to look after. Raleigh, his older brother by a Turn, was always his best friend, and his two younger sisters and youngest brother were always his greatest supporters. Though he loved music and knowledge, the idea of going to the Harper Hall for training never occurred to him. He didn't have the skills, first of all, and he didn't want to leave his home and family.
As he grew older, he discovered a few things: his uncanny abilities to memorize and spew back facts, his slight lack in vision, his distaste for the outdoors, his unconditional urge to protect his family. And of course, his complete and total lack of the skills necessary to make friends. He never really got along with the other Hold children, but never really made any enemies, either; he lived in a state of indifference.
But that was before the Weyr's latest clutch.
Retselin had never thought himself as having a temperament suited to dragons, or dragonriding. His older brother had that covered. But when a Searchdragon came to the hold, it was to his complete shock that not only Raleigh, but Retselin himself were taken away to the Weyr. He could have protested, and perhaps he would have, if not for the encouragement of his brother, along with the rest of his family. They thought he could make a difference in the Weyr, do something more than he ever had at the Hold. And who knew - perhaps the Weyr would make a difference in him, too!
