Avarian was having one of those dreadfully boring days. The candidate lesson was one she'd sat through before, and had been over for a hour or so. There were no messages for her to run today, and it wasn't often that there was, anyway. It was much more convenient to just send a dragon rider. She usually ended up carrying letters from the lower caverns workers to family nearby. It was still fun work, and she got to keep in shape that way, but it wasn't as often as she'd like.
The southern sun beat down on her neck, it was midday and the sun was out full force today, not a cloud in sight. She'd wandered to the lake, and it seemed a wonderful idea to take a dip in it. Vari could never get used to the saltwater ocean swimming, for some reason and preferred the Weyr lake. She paused by a larger rock on the shore, taking off her shoes and socks, then leggings and shirt. She still had her breast band and skirt on, so she wasn't completely indecent, just a tad bit.
Wading into the cool waters, she paused when she hit mid thigh level, and then just fell over into the water. It felt so good! She swam out further in the lake, paddling around for a bit. It used muscles she wasn't used to using in her arms, so she did a few laps across the lake. After that, Avarian paddled back to shore, and sat in the shallow water for a while, enjoying the cool water. Maybe something would happen, it was still a dreadfully boring day...

Aldril was not used to this Southern heat. Nerat wasn't as cold as Benden or Telgar, but it didn't get as hot as it did here. He had already learned that the best way to beat the heat was to take a dip in the cool lake. When he escaped from lessons, he started to hurry down to the lake. Then, he changed pace and walked slowly. It was too hot to jog.
He sighed in relief when the water was in reach, already tugging his shirt off. He dropped it to the ground and kicked it shoes off. It was then that he finally realized that there was a woman sitting in the shallows, wearing nothing but, well...nothing but a bathing suit. But still.
"Oh...hello!" He said, blushing faintly. "I didn't see you there. Erm, I could move further along the shore if you want..." The water looked nice here, but he didn't want to make the girl uncomfortable.

And just to Vari's luck, a boy came along. He even looked to be close to her own age! She could flirt... or make friends. Possibly both. Avarian liked that last option the best so far. She offered him an encouraging smile, then answered. " It's okay. I would like the company, if you don't mind sharing beach with me. I've had a boring day so far, what about you?" Vari was ever the conversationalist.
She stood up after realizing that she hadn't introduced herself, and more than that, she didn't have a clue what this fellow's name was. Standing brought her back into the heat of the day, which was now a pleasant contrast to the cool water. She held her hand out to shake his; saying, "I'm Avarian, Vari for short. What's your name? I've seen you before, but I don't think we've met." Well she did see him in Candidate classes most days; but many preferred to concentrate in those classes with the hatching coming so soon, than socialize.

Aldril shook her hand in a firm grip, returning her infectious smile. "Nice to meet you, Avarian. I'm Aldril. I know I've seen you in lessons, but who has time to talk when the Candidate Master loves the sound of his own voice so much?" He chuckled, showing that he wasn't entirely serious. Aldril liked learning about the Weyr, but he also wasn't used to sitting in lessons all day.
"Come on, it's too hot to be out of the water," he said, pulling off his tunic splashing into the shallows. The water was wonderfully cool against is skin, and he sighed in relief before sitting down. The break the swim added after being hot all day was enough to override his concerns about modesty. "You're right, it's been slow today. I wonder when the Hatching will be?" That, of course, was the primary thing on the candidate's mind these days.

Something didn't like Aldril being so close. Something wanted Aldril gone! But...this something wasn't able to make them leave. This something was hurt and a little discombobulated. But this something had to do something! They were far too close for comfort!
A high pitched screech of defiance exploded through the mostly quiet air. The flashing green-bronze wings caught the sunlight and glinted dangerously in the bright daylight. But his wings faltered and it was clear by his angle of flight that the little bronze firelizard had lost most of the wing sail on his left wing.
Crooning in despair, the little bronze tumbled out of the air, landing pathetically on the soft sand next to the male Candidate's foot. He hissed and swiped at his foot and managed to crawl back to the space he was protecting, to the things he was protecting.
It is unclear whether the two ovals that are firelizard Eggs have taken any damage from the proximity they are to the water front, but it is obvious, on closer inspection, that this Clutch of Eggs has been attacked by tunnelsnakes, and most likely more than one. There are remains of ripped apart Eggshells littering in the small area where these two Eggs are now sitting. However, just by looking at them, it is too hard to tell if these two Eggs are from a green or gold Clutch. After all, a green immediately abandons her Eggs, but there is no gold around to defend this Clutch. Of course, the gold might have died in her attempt to save her Clutch from certain demise and this bronze just might be their sire, for all the injury he's taken.
If the two Candidates were to approach, they'd see that the bronze, crooning agonizingly in his defeat against the much larger creatures (the Candidates themselves), was backing up, relinquishing the Eggs to those he failed to protect them against. In other words, the two Candidates are allowed to take an Egg for themselves, one is large, the other is small, though, as with firelizard Eggs, it is impossible to guess what's inside.

Vari smiled again, happy for some agreeing company. "It's got to be soon. After the incident in the hatching grounds the other day, I would be surprised if it's quiet soon, even though Phaelith got agitated with everyone being there."
She stepped back towards the water, almost back in, when a little creature caught her eye. The sheen of it's hide caught her attention, as it tried to feebly attack Aldril. It was a little bronze firelizard! "Oh Faranth, it's a fire lizard!" Vari was quite surprised that it tried to attack, but then it backed away to reveal two eggs. Eggs?!?! Really? Avarian's surprised showed on her face, as she looked back to Aldril. "I think he's going to give us those eggs."After a minute of observation, she continued. "It looks like there's two. Shall we split them?" She kneeled down and reached out to touch one, not really afraid of the flitt attacking her. "I wonder how close they are to hatching?"

Aldril looked up as a piteous screech echoed through the air. He saw a bronze tumble to the sand and stood up, startled. The firelizard had landed right by his foot, and he just barely managed to step away in time to avoid a scratch. "Poor thing..." he murmured, bending down to inspect the injured wing, but the bronze scurried away. Aldril's eyes widened when he saw what the little bronze was protecting.
A destroyed clutch of eggs, with two surviving. Considering that there were two of them here, it worked out well. He crouched down beside Avarian, touching the second egg. The bronze was retreating, looking like he was giving up. "We might as well take them. The hatchlings would likely die if we didn't," he agreed. "I can't tell how close they are. I don't know anything about flitt eggs."

Avarian smiled at Aldril, then looked back to the fire lizard egg. "I don't know much about fire lizard eggs either. But judging by the shells near them, they're probably hard enough to handle." Vari took her own advice, picking up the smaller of the two eggs. The shell was leathery, and felt like a miniature version of a dragon's egg. It wasn't surprising, since it seemed that fire lizards and dragons were related somehow. Though from what Vari had heard, dragons were by far smarter than fire lizards.
"I can't tell how long it will be to their hatching, if they do hatch, but if they're anything like dragon eggs, it shouldn't be too long. Maybe two seven days at the most..." Vari trailed off, basing her guess on her touching of Phaelith's egg those Turns ago. "But I'm just guessing, so no guarantees!" Vari held the small egg in her hand, wondering what it would indeed hatch to be. It could be anything, she guessed, it could be a green, blue, brown, all equally. Vari thought it might be a little too small to be a bronze or gold, but you never knew...

As Avarian picked up the smaller egg, Aldril gingerly took the larger one and carefully held it in his hands. "It feels a lot like a dragon egg," he said in surprise, comparing the flitt egg to the eggs he had felt at the Touching. "I guess we should probably get these to the barracks before any accidents happen."
((Sorry it's so short. x.x I have a hard time playing candidates after they Impress...))

Avarian nodded to Aldril, "I agree, they'll be safer there, judging from the other shells..." She turned, egg in hand, and started to walk to the barracks. "You want to help me find a basket or something to put sand in for these? They'll need to stay warm..."
((No worries, I kinda do too... shall we wrap this up then?))
