It was a quiet morning, Norali though, striding from her Weyr to the great Hatching Grounds. The ancient and quiet dead volcano that the cavern was built upon was roasting and toasting those Eggs of Phaelith's. Hopefully, they'd be near Hatching soon, but Norali, being quiet new at this and having no one to ask for advice, couldn't be quiet sure. Phaelith, however, maintained that they were getting quite ready and that Norali should stop worrying. At least the gold wasn't going crazy or in one of those horrible maternal spats that some golds, she was told, went into.
No, Phaelith was extremely nonchalant about the whole thing and actually had no qualms about visitors to the Hatching Grounds. Her big head and pride kept any worries at bay, though Norali worried enough for the both of them. While she didn't believe that any direct harm would come to her gold's Eggs nor that anyone would dare steal one, there was just...an odd feeling that she got from this group of Eggs.
Phaelith might have insisted that nothing was the matter, but Norali had thought the gold had had a harder time doing the actual Clutching than a gold would have normally have, though, of course, she couldn't say for sure. It all had to do with that trip up North they'd taken to see the wreckage of Benden just as soon as Phaelith could fly. Those who visited the area even now had strange feelings about the place, though no one, not even the Healers could figure out what the strange sickness were that plagued some of the former inhabitants.
They hair would fall out, their skin would rip and decay and finally, they would die. All strange symptoms for those who were perfectly healthy until the Great Strike. Norali had a bad feeling about going, but she and Phaelith didn't catch anything or get ill. She hadn't thought anything about it afterward, as Phaelith flew long and far almost a Turn later and bore such a grand Clutch as the one that now lay before her in the Hatching Grounds.
Laying snugly between Phaelith's forepaws was a great, golden Egg, surprising as Norali considered Phaelith's first Clutch rather small by her standards. Fifteen Eggs, including the gold. Small size, perhaps, but there weren't lacking for large Eggs. There were two Eggs that were nearly as large as the golden Egg, Norali saw, frowning as she scanned the Clutch. But for all the good, there was certainly the...disconcerting. All alone and almost at the entrance of the Hatching Ground, pushed up against the wall, was a sad and small little Egg. Compared to the others, it was stunted and unhealthy; Norali feared that it wouldn't Hatch at all, frankly.
Norali, you're here...They are hardening nicely. Phaelith bespoke her, awarding her rider a draconic grin: Her maw open partially, her eyes whirling shades of blue in delight.
"Are they? Should we be calling the Candidates soon?" Her rider asked, approaching her queen.
No. It is not quite right yet. Soon. Not yet.
Eggs
Cloudy Skies Egg
This Egg is a medium sized Egg, much smaller than the Queen Bee Egg, but much larger still than the Lonely Hearts Club Egg. For an Egg, it's got a strange coloring, light blue in some places, then swirled with different shades of light gray and cream.
Mossy Tree Egg
Sitting right next to the Cloudy Skies Egg is this very large Egg. Comparitively, it is nearly as large as the Queen Bee Egg, but doesn't at all look as radiant. Actually, the dark brown coloring and the splotchy patterns of green that smudge across this Egg's surface make it look more like a weird looking log than anything else.
Lonely Hearts Club Egg
Sitting all by itself, pressed almost against the wall of the Hatching Grounds close to the entrance is this Egg. It is extremely small and more round than oval. Norali is pretty sure that this Egg won't Hatch because of its size and the extremely dullness of its color, but one never knows. She isn't sure what could be in it, though it could be a green, despite the smallness of the size.
Morning Sunrise Egg
Almost right smack dab in the middle of the Hatching Grounds, and rather close to Phaelith, is the Morning Sunrise Egg. It gradients down from a very bright orange, to a light pink, to a dark red, then eventually to darker shades of blue. In this sense, it looks just like a sunrise coming up over the horizon. The very bright patch of yellow on the upper right hand side of it helps this effect.
Sun Set Egg
Just like the Morning Sunrise Egg looks like a sunrise, this Egg looks like a sun setting. A bit smaller than its brother, this Egg gradients the shades of the Morning Sunrise Egg in complete reverse, complete with its own 'moon' at the bottom left hand corner.
It's All About Me Egg
This Egg, although not one of the larger ones in the Clutch, practically screams, "LOOK AT ME!" Every bit of it is slathered with extremely bright and bold colors. Greens, blues, oranges and reds speckle this egg in a swirl of activity and flamboyance.
Hey, Jealousy Egg
Sitting a little ways away from the It's All About Me Egg, this Egg,, while slightly larger, seems to be rather jealous of the smaller Egg. While it is an Egg of slightly similar colors, they aren't nearly as bright, nor as eye catching. If anything, the blues and greens and oranges and reds are actually rather dull looking in comparison to the It's All About Me Egg.
Leave Me Alone Egg
This medium sized Egg, no matter where it was originally, seems to roll away from its fellow Eggs. It is a single shade of light gray and seems to hate anyone or anything near it. Although, perhaps it only appears to do this, as the Egg is rather round itself and rolls easier than its brothers. Still, one can't help but feel a little put off by whatever is inside when they get too close.
Swords and Shields Egg
This Egg is decorated very nicely. It is neither large nor small, but its size isn't what makes it so interested. On a dark blue back drop, blotches of a much lighter blue clash with stripes of a shiny steel color. Occasionally a stripe bursts through the light blue blotch and once and a while a light blue blotch breaks through a stripe. Very interesting, indeed.
I Surrender Egg
This large Egg is also has a interesting look to it. Grassy green meets a bright robin's egg blue. They merge in the middle, making almost what looks like a picture of a field of some sort. Sticking right out of the grassy green top and melding into the top blue is a very large white spot.
Lookin' Out for You Egg
Sitting almost in front of the Queen Bee Egg is this large Egg. It is relatively the same size as the Mossy Tree Egg and the Darkness Falls Egg, although it is clear that Phaelith favors this Egg over either of those two. It is a bright strong looking bronze-y color, swirled with dark maroons. This Egg looks both aggressive and benign at the same time, earning its name.
Queen Bee Egg
Large and in charge, this Egg is most definitely the queen Egg. While not exceedingly bright, it seems to pulse golden depending on the direction one is looking at it from. It actually looks a little more sandy than anything though with the gold shining through the dust.'
Mardi Gras Egg
Like its name suggests, this Egg is speckled, spotted, and stripped in Mardi Gras colors of green, a color that could be confused with 'gold,' and purple. It's very attractive, though its relative closeness to the Queen Bee Egg takes attention away from it to the golden one.
Front and Center Egg
While not at all that large nor having any really interesting markings, this Egg is bold enough to greet everyone coming to the Hatching Grounds. Standing almost directly at the entrance of the Hatching Ground is this proud, dark blue Egg. Phaelith seems proud enough of the Egg's strong color to stick it out in front, showing off what she's accomplished in this first Clutch of hers.
Soft Swirls Egg
Seeming a bit out of place amongst such brightly and interestingly colored Eggs, the Soft Swirls Egg looks very modest. A medium sized oval, it has a gentle mix of pastels all over its smooth surface, none too bright nor too dull, each allowing the Soft Swirls Egg to blend gently with its backdrop. It gives off a sense of peacefulness to all who come across it and it might be a favorite amongst Candidates who are unsure of themselves and of their standing at the Weyr.
