Things didn’t go so well for the dragonriders of Pern after Thread disappeared. There was no point in existing for the dragons anymore, and they started to behave differently. Golds only flew about once every 5 Turns, and they didn’t fly very far anymore. A clutch rarely had even 10 eggs in it, and a Gold dragon might clutch one queen egg total, usually in one of her later clutches. Green dragons flew about once a Turn, and their flights were half-hearted.
Not only the population, but the dragons themselves started to shrink. It was a slow process, but they did slowly begin to shrink. Clutch sizes began to go down too, and some smaller Queens never laid a golden egg. The Weyrs were all in shambles. The Holds began to refuse to tithe them. The Weyrs fought not only against the Holds for tithes, but against the other Weyrs for the food they had. Some of the Weyrs couldn’t take it and disbanded, joining other Weyrs.
When only 3 Gold dragons remained on Pern, some dragonriders from each Weyr decided to try and form a new Weyr in the Southern continent. A Goldrider agreed to go with them, along with the few riders in the Weyr she was from. They went to the abandoned South and decided to build Lamenta Weyr there. There were only 3 Weyrs left on Pern then, Lamenta, Benden, and Ista.
From the very start, Lamenta had it rough. They had trouble finding a good spot for their Weyr, as the first spot ended up being useless. They went over most of the continent until they managed to find a permanent place for the Weyr. Around that time, a hatching was happening at Benden. Some of Lamenta’s riders who had come from Benden went to see the hatching. It was a clutch of 7 eggs, which was starting to become quite large at the time. The first six eggs hatched and Impressed normally, but the seventh egg, which was light purple in color, broke open to reveal a dragon never seen before. It was about the size of a Bronze hatchling, but instead light purple in color.
Everyone in the Weyr waited for the dragon to Impress, wondering what they could learn from this new dragon. Unfortunately, the dragon was unable to find its Lifemate, and went between. The riders from Lamenta Weyr spread the word to the rest of the Weyr. All three of the Weyrs were on the lookout in the clutches, wondering if another such dragon would appear, but one never did.
As the Turns passed, the three Weyrs managed to hold on. It became easier after some instinct seemed to trigger in the dragons. They began to grow in size instead of shrinking, and the female dragons flew more often. It was welcome to the Weyrs, though not so much to the Holds, who had long since kept out anything related to dragons, resulting in the extinction of watchwhers, and the tame firelizard population going way down. They only lived in the Weyrs now.
As the dragons grew in size, the clutches did too. The largest clutch became 13, when only 10 Turns ago it had been 8. All the Golds started to have at least one queen egg before they couldn’t rise anymore, and some of the larger ones would even have two, or more rarely, three. The Weyrs had no explanation for what caused the dragons to grow again, but it was helpful to the Weyr.
Then Thread fell. No one had any idea how it could have happened, since AIVAS and all his technology and been lost and forgotten. The dragons flew in the air to sear it, but few were prepared for the threat at all, and many of them were injured. Lamenta Weyr protected the Southern continent, which compromised of the Weyr and Lamenta Hold, along with the rest of the South. Benden and Ista protected the North Continent from Thread.
Strange things started to happen at Ista. A black and dark purple dragon hatched out of one of the eggs, it Impressed to one of the girls. Bad luck followed the dragon wherever she went. Most of the bad things didn’t affect her, but instead affected someone else. One horrid day, the dragon’s rider died. Instead of instantly going between, she went on a rampage. The dragon killed the brownrider who had accidentally had a part in the rider’s death. The dragon then attacked all the other people in the Weyr, killing some and wounding some of the dragons that protected others. Eventually, she went between for good, but not before injuring most of the Weyr.
Ista Weyr was unprepared for Threadfall, and at the next Threadfall, the Weyr all but perished. Most of the people of Ista that survived went to Benden Weyr to live there. Some of the dragonriders, however, flew off on their own. The only thing known about where they went was they were somewhere on the Southern continent. No one really knew what they were doing there.
When a Queen at Benden clutched an egg that was the same color as the dragon from Ista, some people began to worry the same fate awaited Benden. When the clutch hatched, out of the egg came a black and dark purple dragon, like before. One of the riders in the stands, who was actually one of the Ista loners, tried to kill the dragon and prevent her from Impressing. He killed a Blue hatchling who innocently wandered over there to try and help the other. The black dragon Impressed, however. Benden held the rider at the Weyr, and there was a debate over whether or not they should kill him, but they never fully reached a decision, though most people didn’t want to kill him. He eventually escaped from the Weyr. When the black dragon was still a weyrling and not fully grown, she was killed by an Ista lone rider. It couldn’t be sure if it was the same one or not, but now the Weyrs were on high alert. There were riders out there willing to kill an innocent dragon because of its coloring. There seem to be a curse on all dragons that color though, as that one too attracted bad luck.
Lamenta Weyr wasn’t affected so much by the Ista riders, but they did get hit hard during the next Threadfall. The only mature Gold dragon’s rider died, and her dragon went between. They were left with Leath, a 1 Turn old weyrling dragon, and her rider, Rahel.
Leath grew swiftly, and it soon became apparent she was the largest Gold yet to appear on Pern. She flew long on her first Flight, and clutched a grand total of 18 eggs. The highest at the time was 14, so the entire Weyr was excited over it. It wasn’t just the number of eggs, but the eggs themselves. She was the first dragon in Turns to clutch a Gold in her first clutch. Along with it was a light purple egg, like the one seen at Benden so long ago that failed to Impress. There were other eggs of interesting colors, and most of the eggs were relatively large. The only problem in the Weyr was that the Weyrleader has died two days before Leath clutched, leaving them without a leader.
Meanwhile, rumors have been flying all over about Benden Weyr. There are stories of a non-sterile green dragon, a dragon that was half one color and half another that died after hatching, and dragons that were way above and below the normal size range. Odd things seem to happening to the dragons of Pern. Hopefully whatever it is will be discovered.
Will Lamenta Weyr be able to survive the threat of Thread and the threat of Ista riders with revenge on their minds? What can be expected of Leath’s clutch? Will you be there to find out?
Currently:
Leath’s clutch will soon be ready for the Touching. All Candidates need to be made.
There will be a hunt for firelizards sometime before the Hatching. Anyone that is part of the Weyr can join in.
