OoC: Pretend the Weyrlings have all, by now, deposited the Eggs onto the Hatching Grounds. Everyone's welcome to chase the BEAST. It was dark. The stars were bright in the sky. There were no clouds. The sun was out. A figure was crouched in the bright, dark shadows of the Hatching Grounds. Its head was turned hungrily towards the mouth of the cavern. The heat from the grounds was enticing and horrifying. In the middle, the beast could see his prizes. No, not his prizes. His siblings. They had been stolen from his mother! His mother's poor heart was broken! They had distracted his mother, his sisters! The distraction had allowed all of his brothers and sisters, so cleverly concealed by his mother and sisters, to be stolen from their hiding places. His eldest Clutchsister had told him that he could help get the little ones back. She showed him where they were being hidden by the cresh'aas. At night, when they were all asleep, they and he would creep into their slumber place. They would get their brothers and sisters back. On the beast's shoulder, a rustle of hide stirred the silent night. In the moon light, the wings glinted gold-green. The beast turned to his sister. She crooned softly. It was time... With a yawn on her couch, Phaelith shifted restlessly. It was very late, she knew, but she couldn't sleep and had no idea why. She had completely forgotten that she'd taken a much longer nap than normal just a few hours ago. But that was then and she didn't retain memories like that. She yawned massively, loud enough to earn a loud 'ssssh!!' from her rider. The gold turned her head irritably towards her sleeping lifemate. Jerk! It wasn't Phaelith's fault that she couldn't sleep. She sifted again, louder than before, and Norali snapped at her to keep it down. Bored and depressed, she unhappily jerked her head towards the moonlit Weyrbowl. There was someone moving around near the Hatching Grounds. Probably those infernal whers and their handlers. Couldn't they be awake during the day like normal creatures? Phaelith humphed and sought the wher's consciousness out with her own...but...there was no wher. Her curiosity peaking, she stretched her long, long neck out towards the ground, straining her eyes for a better view. The moon shown perfectly for a moment and she saw someone - something - streak into the Hatching Grounds. The Eggs! They were not her Eggs, but they were her Eggs! Bugling in alarm, she shouted to the thoughts of all, whether they were asleep or not. Intruder! Intruder in the Hatching Grounds!Empathetic as he was, the beast turned, frightened, towards the entrance of the grounds. From /between/ his brothers and sisters burst over his head, screeching in distress. It was time to go! A container, something he could carry his siblings in was lying close to his feet. The beast picked it up and scooped his brothers and sisters inside, burying them in the warm sand. Time to go. The beast sprinted out of the Hatching Grounds, his siblings in the basket, his favorite siblings in the air around him, leading him away, away...

Not everyone was asleep. For wherhandlers, the middle of the night was, of course, a perfectly civilized hour to be awake.
And who would wherhandlers have to do their chores? Wher candidates, of course. The night, though, suited Margali entirely, it flowed around her. She had the glow half covered for, like a wher, she saw better in dimmer light. As it happened, she was not doing her chores right at that moment, but she was forcing herself to stay awake.
She wanted to be fully adapted to the schedule *before* she had a screaming wherlet to...somebody was shouting.
Somebody female was shouting very loudly.
Somebody female was shouting very loudly *in her head*. The Hatching grounds? There wasn't a clu...oh yes, there was, of sorts, a bunch of firelizard eggs had been put in the unoccupied grounds to heat towards hatching. And some schmuck, no doubt, was increasing his or her chances of Impressing one the old fashioned way. She would bet a full mark, had she such a thing in her possession...that they had an egg thief.
She was dressed for chores, and she just stood, the glow would be fine, and set off at a run for the entrance to the hatching grounds. She had to cross part of the bowl to get there, and there. A running figure. With a basket.
An egg thief, yeah, for sure. Idiot. Didn't he know he could probably get one by asking the Weyrwoman nicely? Margali took off after him nonetheless, trying to cut him off, although she knew she would have to be careful.
She didn't want to break any eggs!
--
In the Candidate barracks, Rilon was having a rather interesting dream. Despite the fact that there was no clutch for a while...something he was not disappointed about...dragons were on his mind.
And in his dream, he was looking down at a pink dragonet with yellow polka dots that was looking up at him with whirling eyes, but instead of introducing herself, she yelled [Intruder in the Hatching Grounds]!
He was just opening his mouth to protest he was no such thing when he woke up and realized that the female voice in his head had not been a dream. And the Candidate barracks, of course, were very close to the Hatching Grounds.
He didn't bother with niceties like getting dressed. That was a pissed off queen dragon in his head, and he was smart enough to do what she said, even if he wasn't sure why...maybe somebody was stealing a flitter egg? Because he was in the barracks, he ran for the entrance to the Hatching grounds...
Not having been very awake, though, he got there in time to see the figure's vanishing form, and somebody fully dressed cutting him off. A wherhandler? He wasn't close enough to recognize his own sister...

Kassea was up for a late shift. She had been assigning herself and her gold wher the late shift ever since after Kassesk had had her first run. And a good one too. She had since finished her cup of klah and was perked up. Kassesk had turned back to head towards the Hatching Grounds. They had made a complete sweep from the Grounds to the right of the entrance and were now heading back to sweep left of the entrance. And then.... She felt Kassesk stiffen and growl. Kassea's stride got longer to catch up to her wher and she spotted someone coming out of the Hatching Grounds, or something. And she instantly heard the voice in her mind. Kassesk barked a warning and ran right up to the creature. Though Kassea's restraint kept her gold wher from tearing the beast to shreds. Kassesk growled and showed her razor sharp teeth at the beast. Kassea walked up to behind her wher's rump to try and get a better look at the creature before the moon's light was lost behind clouds again.

It was night. It was warm. She was in Southern, thus it was simply stifling outside compared tot he woman’s usual night weather. Slowly she turned in her bed, placing a hand against the bed to support her weight as she pulled the pillow over her head and kicked off the blankets. The sun had set hours ago, and yet, still she was up, tossing and turning, trying to get accustomed to the dead heat that roamed through the room. Her bare legs were tangled in the blankets, wearing only shorts, and a sleeveless shirt to bed. Of course, since she had to share her room with candidates, it wasn’t the most pleasant of times for her.
A breeze. It was nice, she felt the cool wind rush across her heated skin, and gently nestled herself deeper into her furs, burying her head into it’s warmth as she pulled the pillow beneath her. Slowly her eyes started to fall, slowly she felt herself drifting off, at peace, in a certain serenity. She could feel the heaviness of slumber tug on her lids, closing them tightly as darkness drifted in like the fog on the moor. Her body relaxed, the soothing sound of the other people’s breathing lulled her. Her mind was darkening, it was beautiful.
It was while asleep that she was most receptive… It was then that she felt the stirring distress of the Queen, and as the bugle resounded through the air, snapping her awake and on her feet before she even realized what was going on. Stumbling through the blankets, Minari quickly slipped a pair of working pants on before she raced out the door, moving only on the urgent urge that she was receiving from the Queen dragon. It was then that she heard the news, halfway through the hall. Someone was in the hatching grounds! Someone was stealing the eggs that she had spent hours dragging back to the Weyr!
She felt a hot flash of fury rush through her, a moment of lost control as her long legs extended and she raced down the corridor, her feet bare, the sound of skin slapping the cement resounding through the halls as she ran out the door. Thank Faranth she was accustomed to Runners, and having to run through the woods barefoot on any given day or she would be seriously regretting the fact that she hadn’t worn her boots. It took all too long…
In a matter of what seemed to be seconds to the female, she was out in the open, racing across the Weyr bowl towards the hatching grounds. It was dark, she saw little. Angrily she stumbled forward, catching her balance at the last second as her hand touched the ground and she continued to sprint. She could hear the rustling of wings, and the growling of the Wher as she got closer. Please just allow everyone to be careful! The fire lizard eggs were in there!
Instead of following the ground, she followed the rustling of wings, her eyes slowly getting accustomed to the somberness of the night as she saw the creature running away with a jar. He wouldn’t get far, even if she had to stop him herself!

Avarian wasn't sleeping nicely that night, restlessly turning this way and that way. It was too hot, and then too cold. For the first time since impressing her dear Sorlith, she wasn't completely exhausted by the time night fell. Vari was usually a night person, but since Sorlith found her, she had been too tired to stay up as usual. Until tonight. But even Sorlith was restless tonight, seemingly picking up the same vibes as the senior queen, Phaelith.
And then the cry came out. Intruders! That was all Sorlith needed to hear to pass onto Vari, already concerned for her eggs. Sorlith was up and out the door before Vari, but Vari was right behind her. Sorlith would protect those eggs they'd found! Vari was the voice of reason though. Move to cut him off Sorlith! I'm right behind you! The tall girl's long legs let her keep up easily, though she figured if she needed to, she could catch the thief if it chose to run. Never run from a runner!
Sorlith saw the gold wher, it's handler, and the girl candidate, relaying all the Avarian in timely fashion, which was as soon as Sorlith's superior eyesight saw them. Then she saw the intruder. What is it? Vari questioned, still only able to make out a vague form sprinting in their direction. I can't tell... Sorlith trailed off.Please save the eggs mine? Please? At Sorlith's pleading, Vari gave into her desire to run. She hadn't had the opportunity since before the hatching to stretch her legs. Avarian increased her pace, lengthened her stride, and full out ran after the intruder. It wouldn't get away from her, it wouldn't make her silent promise to Sorlith a broken promise if she had a choice in it!
((Not late, I hope!))

Intruders N'lel, did you hear? Trogdorth asked him worriedly, poking N'lel to get him to wake up. What? he said groggily. Someone has been on the hatching grounds. Intruders! N'lel understood this time. He got up and looked around. Did they take the eggs? I don't know Mine, I just heard the call. Let us go!
N'lel rushed up. Trogdorth was already rushing down to the hatching grounds. N'lel asked him to slow down, but Trogdorth refused, saying they needed to get down there fast. That made N'lel give up on it. Trogdorth was determined.
They were getting close to the hatching grounds. What intruder was there? What was happening right now? It couldn't be like Phaelith's hatching, could it? They were just firelizards! Trogdorth told him that anything could happen. Things were getting crazier and crazier. N'lel still couldn't see why anyone would want to steal firelizards. It was absurd.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Senra had had a rough day. She wasn't very tired, and had continued to wake up. Kosarth was sleeping soundly for the past hours, but he had woken up not long after she had before. Phaelith says there are intruders on the hatching grounds, Mine Kosarth informed her. Senra was glad to know he didn't seem glad about this. She wouldn't put it past him to be glad something was happening.
She jumped up, as completely awake as she had been for an hour or so. Kosarth did not look so eager to rush to the hatching grounds. You should come, please? Kosarth grunted, but agreed in a very unhappy way. Maybe he didn't like firelziards, but Senra did.
Kosarth went out first, and Senra followed behind him, trying to just follow Kosarth rather than make her own way. His white hide was rather helpful in that. He set a rather slow pace, as though he was dreading this search. Kosarth, we really need you. If we have to go after someone, or something, I won't do it alone. Are you sure you cant' hurry it up? Kosarth didn't reply to this, but he did hurry.
Felicia and Quilareth had both been sleeping restlessly when Phaelith's call went out. Quilareth was instantly alert and went over to nudge Felicia, who came awake quickly from the light touch. "What is it dearheart?" She asked worriedly, thinking the green might have hurt herself while sleeping. Intruders. Mother Phaelith says there are intruders on the sands. "Intruders?" Felicia gasped out in shock and fear, just what the weyr didn't need, someone or something stealing the fire lizard eggs that had been collected. "Well, we need to go and see how we can help." She said firmly, her resolve set as she got out of bed. Quilareth crooned in agreement, already making for the door as Felicia exchanged her sleeping shirt for a short tunic and light trousers.
Then they were out the door, into the main barrack complex. Felicia made out a faint shadowy figure ahead that seemed to be following a creature with white hide. It wasn't until they'd got closer that she realized it was the white dragonet and it's weyrling rider. Quilareth went to walk beside the white dragonet, giving him a soft croon of greeting. Hello Kosarth. Isn't this exciting? I wonder what will happen. "Hello there. I think Quilareth likes your white. Kosarth, isn't it? I am Felicia." As they were walking she didn't bother holding out her hand but stepped in beside the girl.
Senra looked over at smiled at Felicia. Hello Quilareth. I don't really know what will happen. Exciting? I'm not so sure. Firelizards are annoying little things. Okay, maybe one would be nice, but that's it. SenraMine says hello to Yours Kosarth told Quilareth, getting Senra's greeting into their. He was glad to have someone to talk to while they went down.
I thought you didn't like firelizards Kosarth. Suddenly just one would be okay? Senra asked him, hoping he really wouldn't mind having one around, as she liked them. I think just one might be okay to have around. They can be cute, sometimes. Usually they are just annoying little things. If you do get to Impress one, I hope it isn't a Gold. That would mean more of them around. Kosarth clearly said without words that he didn't want Senra to think she could have more than one on her just because he said he wouldn't mind that. If she wanted to try more than that, he would have something to say about that. Kosarth hoped if she did get one, it would be a small Green, or a White, something tiny. I think an Obsidian one would be a good opposite for you Senra remarked. Mine is crazy over firelizards, it seems Quilareth. What about Yours? And what do you think? Kosarth really wanted to know what she thought about it, not just to get an answer that would go with what he thought. He tried to keep his tone expressionless so Quliareth wouldn't feel pushed to give a dishonest answer.
Felicia gave Senra a gentle smile back, although she wondered why the girl didn't speak. Senra says hello Feliciamine. Quilareth passed on, glad to have met a friendly dragon. She wondered what would happen if they didn't manage to get the eggs back. I think Feliciamine wouldn't mind a firelizard, neither would I really. I mean, they can be helpful for bathing, getting places where ours cannot. Quilareth replied truthfully, although she did wonder what the white had against firelizards. Why are you not keen on them Kosarth? I thought a dragonet such as yourself would love having firelizards around.
Kosarth had to think about that for awhile. If I really try to think about them well, they aren't that bad, but I just really don't like them. Whenever I think about them, they seem like annoying little things that fly around and seek attention and food with nothing really good about them. After all, they aren't dragons and they can't even speak with words. Kosarth was happy to be able to speak to Quilareth, who he was warming up to. She was a small dragon to, and though it didn't bother him, it was nice to have other dragons around that weren't gigantic. She seemed to like him to. Maybe it was because he was small.
Quilareth thought about Kosarth's answer for a moment before giving her responce. Well, I haven't really seen any so I don't really know wat they'd be like, or if they'd be good for anything. Perhaps they do have their uses. She seemed a little unsure but was stil confident in her words. She liked having another dragonet to talk after the weeks she'd spent in the infirmary, part of it was that he was small like she was and she preferred those nearer her own size. Perhaps you would like them more if yours had one that provided help for you, such as getting to al the places yours can't when bathing you. She suggested gently to the white, wondering if she might persaude him to at least think about it.
Kosarth had to think about that a bit. Maybe. It is always possible, I suppose. I just really don't like them that much. One of them would be fine I suppose. SenraMine would like an Obsidian one because it would be around the opposite of my color, but I would prefer a White because they are small. There was proof that he and Senra had their differences. Kosarth was glad that he could talk to Quilareth. He wasn't sure he liked the way the conversation was going, because he didn't like this unease about how much they liked firelizards. He just didn't like them that much. Kosarth wasn't even sure why he didn't like them so much, they just seemed annoying and rather useless to him.
