Down here, Margali felt no need to hide under a hat, to swathe herself in clothing on the hottest of days.
It had not been that hard to get directions to the part of the lower caverns that was dedicated to the whers and their handlers. It was odd. She would not, otherwise, have risked any commitment to a life on as little information as she had.
Yet, as a wherhandler, she would have a place. They were not dragons, they were creatures as made for the darkness as she was. The one or two she had glimpsed in her life had seemed stocky, almost ugly creatures.
No, not dragons. Yet, she could not ride a dragon. She could handle a wher. People would not respect her the way they did dragonriders, but she would have a job. A purpose. A life that was more than a burden on others.
For now, though, she was looking for a wherhandler she could talk to.
