Character Info
Name: Margali
Honorific Preference: N/A
Rank: Candidate (wher)
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Appearance:
Margali is...striking. She is of average height and feminine build, with medium-sized breasts and broad 'child-bearing' hips. Thus, she would not stand out were it not for her coloring. She is...almost colorless. Her hair is the purest, spun white, not blonde, but as white as that of an old woman. Silky and perfectly straight, she wears it long, often in a single thick braid that falls almost to her waist. Her skin, too, seems to have been drained of all color and her eyes are a light grey, flickering oddly red in certain lights. The slightest exposure to sun, though, causes her to redden and then to burn.
She tends to wear clothes that cover as much of her body as possible, especially when obliged to go outside, and always wears a wide brimmed hat when out in sunlight.
Personality:
Margali is a little shy, an introvert around strangers who only blossoms when in the presence of close friends. She is not defensive about her looks, though, and anyone who teases her about her hair will probably find themselves parrying a comment about some quirk they, themselves possess.
Still, she does not seek out Gathers or large crowds, she prefers to be at the edge of major events and is likely to be the person wallflowering with a glass of something at any party. She is the opposite of an exhibitionist, and prefers not to be the centre of attention.
Some might, thus, think of her as weak, or even overlook her as a pretty girl. But there is a core of steel to this young woman. First of all, she has lines. If she finds out about physical abuse, of man or beast, she will do something about it...although seldom by confronting the abuser. She is more likely to find support before doing so, or go to somebody in authority. Second of all, in a tight spot, she is quite capable of taking charge, often without any conscious thought involved.
Margali does have one problem when it comes to Weyr life. Having been sheltered for her first sixteen years, she is unsure of her own sexuality, particularly her tendency to be attracted to other girls. She is not a prude, simply...shy. The ever-changing relationships amongst the riders might well be off putting to her. She will never be one to bed hop, preferring to keep each lover for at least a little while.
History:
Margali is the oldest daughter of a man, Galin who had few prospects...a poor cothold and little wealth.
Her genetic quirk appeared to be a mutation, for her siblings were all of normal coloration...and she had a lot of siblings. One other brother and, count them, eight younger siblings, five boys and three girls. Her mother was one of those women who could just, well, pop them out...each birth easy.
Margali, though, was a problem from birth. Her white hair and her odd eyes...with the red flicker that sometimes seemed to come from their depths...marked her out. A more superstitious society might have called it a devil's mark. Even worse, from birth, the child hated sunlight. Her eyes seemed as sensitive to the light as any wher's, and her eyesight was poor...she was not blind, but certainly lacked full vision.
Her mother taught her household skills, and she stayed indoors, often venturing out only at night. Her father, who loved her, despaired. She would not, likely, find a husband. And with all those children...they became poorer with each birth.
Thus, two turns ago, the entire family picked up stakes and went South. There, there was land for the taking.
Margali accepted that there was nothing she could do or be except her mother's housekeeper. She was too small to be a miner and her vision precluded the Starcraft. Whatever she did, she would have to avoid the sun, and that made journeying for any craft hard. They found their new home, and settled in...for two turns
Then, a dragonrider came to their holding, a greenrider from Southern Weyr. His dragon picked out not one, but two of the children. One was fourteen year old Rilon. The other was Margali.
What could the greenrider do? There was this girl, clearly sensitive to the dragons...but not able bodied, not able to be a Candidate because of her eyesight.
He was about to leave with Rilon when an idea hit him. This girl could not ride a dragon. But they had a gold wher soon to run, and a shortage of people expressing interest in her eggs.
So, after all, he took two teenagers to Southern Weyr, one to Stand for a dragon, the other to accept a wherhandler's life...as better than anything else she might have been offered.
