Avarian stretched her long legs out under the table, thankful the dining hall was more or less deserted. Her lunch companions had left a little bit ago, having matters to attend to. Vari on the other hand, had been purposefully avoiding taking messages from the Weyr since the hatching was imminent. The route director had allowed her this luxury, since she was technically a Candidate first and foremost, not a runner. However, all that meant that Vari had time to spare. Which she was currently wasting by loitering in the dining hall.
She was lounging in her chair, thinking of the coming hatching. It seemed a good chance that she might impress something, this time around. Avarian didn't really care if it was green or gold that would find her suitable, just that hopefully some dragonet would. Before, when she stood as a Candidate with Norali for Phaelith's egg, she wasn't sure if she wanted to impress. But after seeing Phaelith impress to Norali, the look on the other woman's face, the pure happiness at that moment, really pushed her to stay a Candidate. She wanted what Norali had - a bond with someone who would never leave you. It was truly a amazing thing, the bond between a rider and their dragon. So there Vari sat, pondering this issue, a thoughtful look on her face.

Why did Amintia get stuck with all the longest candidate chores? They took up all her time! Yes, she knew the chores were so candidates had something useful to do that helped the Weyr in between Hatchings, and she didn't mind that. But why did she get nailed with the longest ones? Today it was cleaning out the herdbeast stalls. Now, don't get her wrong, Ami liked herdbeasts, but do you have any idea how long it takes to muck out their filthy stalls?
Ah, well, if the Candidate Master ordered it, then she must obey. Ami was just annoyed because she'd missed lunch and she was hungry! Only she couldn't go down to the Dining Hall in what she was wearing right now, so she had to go around to the Candidate Barracks first to change, and...yes, on second thought, take a shower, too. That was dirty work. Amintia didn't mind getting dirty so much, but that didn't mean she wanted to go out in public covered in stains! So it was another candlemark of showering, drying of, brushing her hair and putting on presentable clothing before she was finally able to get to the Dining Hall for some food.
Showering always calmed Ami, so it was in a much improved mood that she entered the Lower Caverns, in a clean, pale tunic. As usual when she had nothing major to occupy her time and her mind, her thoughts drifted to the impending Hatching. It couldn't be long now; the Touching had come and gone, and they must be nearly hard enough! As always, she focused mostly on that beautiful Queen egg, for she was a Queen candidate and that was what she wanted most of all. The only other choice she had was a green, and while a green was better than nothing...they weren't exactly to her taste. Greenriders never became Weyrwoman! They never became any important rank. But being a Greenrider was still better than not being a rider at all.
As she'd expected, there were very few people left in the Dining Hall. Along with very little food left...but the kitchen always had leftovers. She procured a plate of food, and came back out to the Hall, casting her eyes around for a place to sit. She saw the girl she'd - kind of - met when she'd first seen the eggs. Avarian, that was her name. Vari. Well, now was as good a time as any to get to know the taller girl. She moved towards her, setting her plate at the space beside the lounging candidate before pulling back the chair and sitting down. "Hi, Vari," she greeted, watching the girl but also eyeing her plate out of the corner of her eye; she didn't want to eat if they hade a conversation, for that would be rude, but, Faranth, she was hungry.

Vari was startled out of her thoughts by another Candidate, Amintia coming over. She eyed the girl for a moment, noting how she eyed her food. "Hi Amintia. Would you care to join me? I've got nothing to do right now...Maybe I'll talk you ear off while you eat!" Vari combined that with a grin, teasing a bit. It was just Vari's nature to joke and play with people, to and passed their point of no return sometimes. It was a rare thing when she didn't tease a person, and usually meant that she didn't like that person.
Since Vari fully expected Amintia to sit down, Avarian moved so she was sitting up instead of slouching. She laced her fingers together, and propped her elbows on the table in front of her. She examined the newly washed appearance of Amintia, thinking again. The girl would eventually adjust to the weyr a bit better. Vari didn't really have room to speak on that issue, not a native to the Weyr herself, but that didn't stop her thinking at the moment. Food was paramount in the Weyr, and it's not like the kitchen staff cared what you had on your clothes when you came to eat. Aw, well, lessons learned in time. Back to a safer subject.
A smile reappeared on Avarian's face, and she asked, "Are you ready for the hatching? The suspense is killing me!"
