The moon was still upon the horizon as gentle footsteps crept down the stairs of the hold. There was not another sound that dared to rush through the house. The silence was like a blanket that coated everyone with security. Only the gentle snoring of the dog resting beneath the table could be heard, and even he didn’t budge as the footsteps moved right beside him. His nose twitched, his paw brushed the ground beside his stomach, and his head lolled to the side. He was a content puppy in his sleep, his rough brown fur in need of a good brushing. His tail was in his water dish, but he laid there undisturbed. The night went on.
Through the kitchen the footsteps continued into the sitting room, stopping at the door. The moonlight filtered in through the windows, decorating the humble home in soft silver light. Beside the wooden bench, the shadows of the light danced upon the wall, causing the amber eyes that stared at them to see horses running through a field, dragons soaring through the sky. Her mind was wandering as she brought her eyes towards the fireplace where the coals were tinted red by the dying embers. The floor beneath her feet was chilled, the chill of fall starting to take its toll upon the sleeping house. Slowly she turned her eyes away from the burning red of dragons fighting thread, of dancing shadows that allowed her imagination to soar.
The footsteps moved once more, heading towards the closet where they stopped. A creak in the floor caused the female to freeze as she started to crouch, listening to the silence of the house, hearing only the wind blowing through a crack in the window that they hadn’t yet fixed. She knelt before the closet, where a delicately hand reached down to touch the patterns on the boots that were at the bottom. Slowly her fingers trailed along the leather until she finally touched the nice warm boots that she wore for winter riding. Gently she took them within her fingers and brought herself to the balls of her feet, moving ever so slowly, waiting for the sound of her movements to wake the household and give her away. It would be horrible if that were to happen. Her heart was soaring for the first time in years, she wanted to be free. Attentively her eyes wandered across the jackets that were found before her. Seconds passed as she stared within the darkness, only the sliver of argent hope from the moon giving her light. She saw it after a moment, the tougher fabric of a riding jacket, but as she stretched out her hand to take it, the woman hesitated. If her dad woke up, and saw this jacket gone, he would be furious. She wasn’t supposed to be awake for another three candlemarks yet.
Without a moment of hesitation that could follow, the woman took a softer jacket, one that would only keep her warm, without giving her any protection before she crept towards the door again. Gently she grasp the lock, moving it until she could open the door, doing so very slowly as well. As soon as the crack was big enough, she was through, her lithe figure slipping out into the darkness as she closed the door behind her, a smile bright upon her face.
Walking hastily across the porch upon the balls of her feet, she paused upon the last step, staring up at the windows overhead. There was not a light that flickered through the blinds, nor was there a stir across their fabric to show that anyone was walking around. She was safe. Dropping her boots to the ground, she slipped her feet within their chilly embrace. They would be warm soon. Once they were all tied up, she dashed off, lopping across the yard towards the runner’s pen, holding back the laughter as her hair bounced in all directions, and her eyes danced in earnest dreaming. The moon was her only witness as its light guided her way towards the somewhat illuminated barn. She could hear the runnerbeasts stirring within, their hooves stamping upon the ground as she slipped inside the barn.
“Shhh, you’ll wake up the house!” The young woman whispered, her voice as soft as the gentle breeze outside. She could hear some of them whinnying softly at her voice, recognizing it despite the darkness as she roamed through the pen, walking towards her Racing Star. Well, the equine was her parents, but she loved to think that the beautiful mare was hers, with her long legs, and beautiful painted coat. She was bred to be a show runner, and of course, she could attract eyes from all over. Unfortunately, after the disaster, there hadn’t been any shows, and in order to keep her in shape, Minari often found herself sneaking out like this. It had been a while… The was still warring. It was the first time in ages that she was allowing herself to dream.
“Come here, girl.” The young woman whispered as she draped her coat around the Equine’s head, surrounding the horse in her scent as she brought her out into the darkness, and gently tied her to a poll as she went to get her saddle and her bridle. Once the runnerbeast was wearing the proper tack, and had her hooves mucked out, she silently ran her hand along her body as she lead her forward, keeping her sweater firmly around her eyes. She didn’t want to horse to bolt, or get spooked while in the yard. It was a disaster that was just waiting to happen.
After minutes of walking, Minari heard only the rhythmic steps of the runnerbeast, and the gentle warm breathing upon her shoulder. Hesitantly she pulled away the sweater and slipped her own body inside of it as she gently took hold of the reins and held them firmly as she placed a foot into the stirrup, pulling herself on top of the runnerbeast without a problem. Beneath her, she felt her equine dancing, each hoof touching the ground in eagerness as dark eyes gazed at the night scenery around her. It was at times like these that Minari pondered on what the Equine’s saw in this scenery, that caused their blood to burn and boil, and their spirits to soar. She couldn’t allow herself much time to think about it as she slowly nudged her equine forward, reveling in the smooth gait of a race horse as she obeyed without hesitation.
Walking down the road, MInari allowed her mind to soar as she stared up at the stars above. She could make images of dragons in the sky, her childhood dream causing her to smile softly as she relaxed, letting the beast warm up. A giddiness slowly started to bubble within her chest, and soon soft hyper giggles escaped her lips. On nights like this, anything is possible! She thought to herself as she brought her attention to the road before her, and gently earned her equine into a trot, rising to each second beat of the horse’s hooves.
“You never let my dreams die, did you girl? You simply give them wings!” She whispered as she felt the horse speed up beneath her, catching the rush that its rider felt. A brighter smile traveled through her face as she brought her body forward, and urged her horse into a canter, feeling the nice gait of the runner as it rushed towards a fence, keeping away the open plains. Nothing was going to stop them.
I want my wings back, girl… Make me fly!
With those thoughts traveling through her mind, she brought herself forward as the equine raced towards the fence, leaping through the air. For a brief moment, they were soaring, her and her equine. It was only the rush of the landing that caused Minari to snap out of her reveries with a crystalline laugh. The reins were loosened, and with only open fields ahead of them, the runner raced forward, head lowered, longs clearing the ground quickly. They had hours to kill before they would have to go home. Let’s ride!
The green-yellow grass of fall was a blur beneath her as her eyes danced towards the colourful trees. They had nothing to worry about, not a fear in the world as the lean working woman whooped into the night, her head thrown back. The wind was flowing beneath her arms, along her neck and down her back. She could hear her sweater fluttering faintly, and it was magnificent! In a tangled net behind her, her hair flowed as her golden eyes danced.
Perhaps they couldn’t fly together, but they could most certainly be free!
