Thank the heavens above, they were managing to go more than a few seconds without looking as though they'd murder each other! That was certainly an improvement over the none-too-subtle glares or tics or irritation, and Halmari was more than willing to let her general annoyance with the man go, if it would ease the way. They should have been bonding as friends, after facing down the horrid Oldtimer, not ripping each other apart. Then again, the young woman never had been one for fond sociability just because of momentary accord. Ah, well, she'd try, if only to preserve her own standing in the eyes of the bronzerider. She really ought to be acting as a gold weyrling should, anyway.
An unladylike snort of laughter was the response, surprised out of her before she could modify its tones into the more civilized sound it should have been. Ah, well. Az're's view of her couldn't get much lower just because she didn't laugh like a proper Holdbred lass, right? Besides, he might take the honest laugh better than one of a sweeter, more false construction. And it was funny, if more than a touch disrespectful. He must have had an interesting weyrlinghood, pulling pranks like that on his Weyrling Master, and the others whose unpleasant job it had been to train him up as a dragonrider.
Another roll of pale grey eyes, mischievous grin still playing around her lips, though not yet fully fledged. "Well if you're going to go that far, that makes you Assistant Weyrling Master Az're of Bronze Xitherlyth, most Glorious and Incomparable dragonrider." Her voice had assumed haughty, lofty tones for the string of titles, but her face was neutrally bored, a perfect imitation of one of the higher-ranking Hold guards whose job it was to announce entrances or such things. Quickly she broke into the almost-smile again, giving a quick shrug of one shoulder. "But that's just too much."
His laughter made her look up quickly, but he seemed to be agreeing with her statement, not thinking her a fool for such an outburst. "Fifty or more, I'm told," she said with a mock-sigh, as though she actually minded the fact that her dragon would grow to be one of the largest on Pern - perhaps she'd even outsize the legendary Ramoth, now deceased. "I'm going to need a whole weyr's help to get her cleaned and oiled to perfection once she's full grown," she noted with a hint of amusement, shaking her head.
